FIRM SPOTLIGHT:

ARNOLD BLOCH LEIBLER

Arnold Bloch Leibler (ABL) is a premium Australian commercial law firm renowned for advising clients on their most significant legal matters, such as high-stakes transactions, litigation and commercial issues.

Arnold Bloch Leibler was founded by Arnold Bloch in 1953. What started as a modestone-man firm in Ripponlea has since grown to employ approximately 250 people, with offices based in both Melbourne and Sydney.

“Our standing within the legal profession has been built over more than 60 years”.  ABL are best known for advising entrepreneurial businesses and private clients.

The firm also works with international corporations who have interests in Australia.“From a client perspective, our aim is not to service our clients for all of their legal needs − rather, we position ourselves as the lawyers to go to when everything is on the line, where strategic imperatives are invoked, and when commercial thinking that’s out of the box is required.”

ABL enjoys long-standing relationships with a select group of other professional advisors, including accountants, private equity firms, insolvency practitioners, private bankers and overseas-based specialist law firms. These valuable relationships allow ABL to provide a comprehensive service.

“While our storied history is long, we are a modern firm. We see the law as an instrument of change, as a way forward. Our partners and lawyers are often at the centre of law reform and regularly advise on landmark matters.”

As a result of its long-standing reputation in Australia, ABL works closely with many high profile clients. Perhaps most notably, ABL recently advised agricultural chemicals group Nufarm on the sale of part of its South American business to Sumitomo Chemical Company Limited.

This was 1.18 billion dollar transaction. ABL’s structure is different to that of most other competitive law firms. Rather than creating specialist groups, ABL takes a broad-based approach, training its lawyers as ‘generalist specialists’. “The feedback from our lawyers is that, while it’s more challenging, the satisfaction that comes from achieving excellent outcomes for our clients is unique.”

ABL has been listed in the 2020 edition of the independent Legal 500 Asia Pacific guide. Twenty-five lawyers from ABL have been recommended in the editorial, with five individuals named in the elite ‘Leading lawyers’ list. ABL has also been recognised as a leading firm by the independent legal guide Chambers Asia Pacific.

In Victoria, ABL offers three clerkship intakes each year. At ABL, the clerkship experience is an insight into the unique experience you’d have as a graduate. “You will quickly become immersed in the firm’s culture, work on active matters and be given real responsibilities. You will have direct contact with partners and clients in meetings, calls and court hearings.”

ABL also offers a unique in-house graduate training program. Rather than attending an external course, graduate’s learn on the ground, from ABL’s best and brightest partners and senior associates. “You will benefit from real work experience and direct client contact that sets you apart from your peers in the profession.”

“The people we hire are the best and brightest, who want the most challenging, complex work in the market.”
