Welcome to Careers for 2008.

Careers can be a bit daunting, particularly for students in the earlier years of their study. The best way to make the most of the opportunities available to you is to get involved, find out as much as you can and give yourselves the best shot at getting the job that you want at the end of uni. The Careers portfolio is there to make that a bit easier for you.

Over the summer break the Careers team has been busy planning many events and publications for a bigger and better 2008.

Following the successes of 2007, the Careers team will again be holding seminars on campus featuring a wide range of legal employers and associations, publishing the must-read Careers and Seasonal Clerkship Guides, and above all providing all the Careers and employment info you could possibly need.

In early Semester 2 the faculty is holding a week of careers and skills workshops and presentations for everyone – and yes it’s free – and there’s no classes. You’ll also do your PLS tasks that week. The DLSS is involved in planning these activities, so stay tuned for more details on ‘Professionals Week’ as they come to hand.

Because of this, the DLSS Careers program has changed a bit. In 2008 the following activities are planned:

  • Seasonal Clerkship Guide (to be released mid-Feb)
  • Careers Week (mid-March, perfect timing for Seasonals applications)
  • The 2009 Careers Guide, featuring everything you could possibly need to know about getting a job at then end of uni (and even during your course), and the changes to the graduate programs
  • VCLSS Careers Fair (usually early August)
  • Professionals Week (mid-August)
  • Volunteering and non-firm employer seminars (Semester 2)
  • HR and lawyers from attending the DLSS BBQ’s so you can get to know more about them and opportunities at various firms

If there’s anything you would like to see included on the Careers program, comments on what we’re doing or anything else Careers related, please feel free to approach any of the Careers team via the contact details listed below.

All the best for 2008.
