  WHO IS THE VWLSC?

The Victorian Women Law Students’ Collective, VWLSC, began in 2004 and comprises of members from the Deakin, La Trobe and Victoria Law Students’ Societies and the Women’s Officers from Melbourne and Monash Law Students’ Societies.

The VWLSC It is a non-for profit group that relies exclusively on sponsorship from the VCLSS, Law Firms and Legal Bodies. It engages in two activities; The Women and the Law Breakfast and a Mentoring Program.

It should also be noted that despite the use of the word Women in the name of the organisation, men are warmly welcomed at register as mentors and to attend the Breakfast (where it is great to see the increasing number of men attending each year!).

Alternatively, questions or queries relating to the VWLSC can be directed to the Deakin representative, Katie Elder at kee@deakin.edu.au

  WOMEN AND THE LAW BREAKFAST

From its humble beginnings in 2003 of one hundred law students and members of the legal profession at the Essoign club, the Women and the Law Breakfast is now the highlight of Law Week in Victoria , with four hundred women and men in attendance.

Held in the third week of May each year to coincide with Victorian Law Week, the Breakfast is a chance for law students and members of the legal profession to come together to listen to three inspirational women, including a member of the judiciary and a law student, over a light meal. More importantly however, it allows for the awareness of women in the legal profession and the amazing things that they can accomplish at all stages of their careers.

With past speakers including the Honourable Victorian Supreme Court Chief Justice Marilyn Warren and Children’s Court President, the Honourable Judge Jennifer Coate, Breakfast delegates are able to hear from some of the most eminent members of the Australian judiciary, while also being informed about current legal issues such as human trafficking, parents who kidnap their own children, the AFL Tribunal, the Reprieve organisation and prison advocacy systems to name but a few.

  MENTORING PROGRAM

It is often hard for students to move from university straight into the workforce, and the prospect of working with older and wiser professionals can be both intimidating and daunting.

The VWSLC Mentoring Program has been designed to help combat feelings of isolation and confusion that inevitably come when entering a new and potentially challenging environment and to establish links between women with similar interests. By establishing a relationship with someone who has been through it before, we believe that students will be better able to achieve their full potential and have some fun along the way.

The program will be launched at the VWLSC Women and the Law Breakfast in May 2006. Please keep and eye on this page, the forum and in WADR for more details!
