  WHO IS THE VCLSS?

The VCLSS is the Victorian Council of Law Students’ Societies. Comprising of the Deakin, La Trobe, Melbourne and Monash Law Students’ Societies (LSS’), it is the only official state level law students’ organisation in Australia.

The VLCSS Committee is broken up into four roles; Chair, Secretary, Treasurer and Vice-President. Each LSS rotates through these roles on an annual basis and three members from each LSS sit on the Committee. At Deakin, this is usually the Burwood and Geelong Presidents and either the Burwood VP Education, Careers or Competitions.

The purpose of the VCLSS is to give a single voice to Victorian law students in dealings with the Law Institute of Victoria and the legal community generally. It also allows for Victoria to stand united during ALSA Council Meetings to ensure that Victorian students are well represented. However, like all law student bodies, the VCLSS is also about furthering students’ career and networking prospects, while also providing social activities. The VCLSS does this through the annual VCLSS Careers Fair, the VCLSS Olympics and the Governor-General’s Competitions.

As the VCLSS website is currently under construction, any questions or queries regarding the VCLSS can be directed to the 2006 DLSS representatives; Ryan Conroy at rjconr@deakin.edu.au, Damon Hauenstein at dlhau@deakin.edu.au, or Jesse Sharp at jashar@deakin.edu.au

  CAREERS FAIR

Each year in Semester Two, the VCLSS holds a Careers Fair in Melbourne . The fair brings together over 40 firms, government agencies, commercial employers, legal bodies and legal education institutions from all over Australia.

An event not to be missed, it is your once in a year chance to chat and network with the people who work at these places. Additionally, practice interviews are also run with the HR departments of Melbourne ’s finest firms, giving you a chance to have your resume read over and your interview skills critiqued before the real thing.

A FREE EVENT, it is something that every law student should attend, whether they are first year or fifth year.

(And if that still doesn’t do it for you, come for all the free show bags full of post-its, pens, highlighters, note pads, toys and lollies!)

  GOVENOR-GENERAL'S COMPETITIONS

In second semester each year, the VCLSS runs the Governor-General’s Competitions. Comprising of a Junior Moot, Senior Moot and a Client Interview Competition, pride and glory is on the line as the smaller unis (Deakin and La Trobe) compete against the sandstones (Melbourne and Monash) to see who will take home the silverware.

The first round of heats is usually held at Melbourne University Law School . The names of the four LSS’ are drawn out of a hat to see who will be competing against who and the winners of each heat then move on to the Grand Finals at the Federal Court. Competition is always bound to be tough, but not as tough as the drinking at the After Party.

Deakin representatives are usually the winners of the Junior and Senior Moots and the Client Interview competitions, so if you still need an incentive to get involved at the DLSS level, then this is it! Deakin had also faired very well of the last few years, so if you are not competing, get along and support your fellow Deakinites!

OLYMPICS

Victoria . It’s the heart of the only nation on earth where sport is considered a religion. So in true sporting spirit, the VCLSS runs an Olympic Games in Semester Two each year, followed by another great Australian institute, the after party.

Comprising of Aussie Rules Football, Soccer, Netball and Basketball, the games are held at Monash University each year. All Deakinites get a cool DLSS t-shirt to compete in as they take on Melbourne, Monash and La Trobe, so even if we can’t win at sport, we win the fashions on the field.

Keep an eye out on the forum, website and WADR in semester two to find out how you can get involved in Team Deakin.

Go Deakinites!
