Mission Statement: Deakin Law Students Society is a non profit organisation which aims to advance and represent the academic, vocational and social interests of law students at Deakin University .
Since its inception, Deakin University has taken a progressive attitude in its approach to legal training. This approach has gained Deakin University respect within the legal community with the knowledge that it is a well-established Law School .
The Deakin Law Students' Society (DLSS) seeks to compliment the Law School by serving the extensive educational, vocational and social interests of its members. In serving those interests, the DLSS, rather than following the traditions of other institutions, is listening and communicating with both students and those in legal circles, and as a result is creating and building a progressive tradition for the future.
So what does the DLSS do?
Where to start! Remember the last Law Ball that you went to? It was organised by the DLSS. Remember the Careers Guide that you read through while applying for Articled/Seasonal Clerkships? It was designed and printed by the DLSS. And what about that competition that you entered into last year? Again, organised by the DLSS. We could keep going. Essentially, the DLSS organises functions, competitions, careers fairs, seminars and guides, inter-varsity competitions, education briefs, numerous publications, discussion groups and much, much, more - everything that we feel law students should have.
The DLSS also represents Deakin Law Students’ on many committees. These include the VCLSS (Victorian Council of Law Students' Societies), ALSA (the Australian Law Students’ Association), the VWLSC (Victorian Women Law Students’ Collective) and the School of Law Executive.
If you want to get involved in any of the above mentioned programs, or if you want to suggest any extra activities or initiatives that you think that the DLSS should run, then tell us! After all, we are only as good as our members, and with every single law student an automatic member of the DLSS, we are here to serve each and every one of you, whether you are at Burwood or Geelong or in another part of Victoria or Australia or in some exotic location around the world; and we know there are a few of you!)
To contact us, you can email the Melbourne chapter at dlss.burwood@gmail.com a specific DLSS member (go to the Melbourne Committee or Geelong Committee page in the About US section of the website) or call our Burwood office on + 613 9244 6495 or the Geelong Office on +61 3 5227 2407. If speaking to us in person is more your bag, then you can visit the Burwood Office in C.3.17 or the Geelong office in EF3 or simply stop us if you see us around campus.
