ALSA

  WHO IS ALSA?

ALSA is the Australian Law Students’ Association. It is the peak national representative body for law students in Australia and comprises of 31 Law Students’ Societies and represents approximately 28,000 Australian law students.

The core functions of ALSA are to represent and promote the interests and concerns of Australian law students; gather and disseminate information of interest and concern to Australian law students; promote and facilitate communication and the exchange of information between law student societies, particularly within Australia; and promote and facilitate interaction and activities of a social, intellectual, and competitive nature among law students generally.

ALSA is a not-for-profit association run by law students elected annually for the benefit of all law students nationally. The governing body is the ALSA Council, to which each member association may appoint two representatives, who are usually its President and Vice-President. ALSA's day-to-day operations are run by an executive and committee who are elected at the Annual General Meeting.

  CONFERENCE

Overview
The ALSA conference is held annually in July. The location of the conference changes each year in accordance with the ALSA Conference Rotation Roster, and in 2006 the conference will be hosted by the VLCSS in Melbourne from the 3rd-9th July!

A week of fun and frivolity, conference is 7 days and 6 nights of competitions, council meetings, seminars and workshops and social events with 400 law students from Australia , New Zealand and Singapore in attendance.

Competitions
With fame, glory and bragging rights to be had, competitions at ALSA bring together the crème of the crop from Law Schools around Australia and New Zealand , as competitors participate in:

  • Mooting
  • International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Moot
  • Negotiation
  • Witness Examination
  • Client Interview
  • Paper and Oral Presentation.
  • The ALSA Competitions are considered to be the peak Australasian competitions, so if you ever needed a reason to get involved in a DLSS competition, this is it!

Council Meetings & Annual General Meeting Competitions
ALSA holds three council meetings throughout the year, the second of which is held during conference.

Far more exciting though, is the ALSA AGM. Annual reports are given by members of the executive, constitutional changes are ratified and new office bearers are elected for the coming term. All Deakin students are encouraged to run for an officer bearer position on ALSA and continue to the good work of the Deakinites who have gone before them.

    Education Seminars & Workshops
The ALSA Conference also includes ALEF, the Australian Legal Education Forum. Each year prominent members of the legal profession are sought to speak to issues which are of interest to students. Some previous seminars featured at Conference have included cyberspace and intellectual property, extreme sentencing measures and sexual assault reform. The concept of workshops has been implemented to give delegates an opportunity to gain some practical knowledge regarding the workings of a Law Students Society and how to enhance Practical Advocacy skills.

    Social Functions
    2 Balls
    2 Day Trips
    3 After Parties
    2 Theme Nights
    1 Cocktail Party
    and that’s just for starters!!!

Yessirie, that ALSA Conference is where you play hard during the day, but party even harder during the nights. The social functions kick of with the registration festivities and don’t stop until the early hours of the 7th day when the last delegate stumbles out of the Closing Night Dinner After Party venue.

In 2006, Deakin’s very own Katie Elder is in charge of the conference social functions, and with a Deakinite at the helm, you can rest assured that the social functions will GO OFF!

A word of advice though….dress to impress for all of the Social Functions, as sharing the ‘ALSA Love’ takes on a whole new meaning at conference. And don’t discount the theme nights either….the themes are hot, the costumes hotter and the dance floor smoldering!

    Tell Me More!
